SBC vs. AT&T
SBC has a history of growth through acquisition. It purchased Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell in 1997, SNET in 1998, and Ameritech in 1999. The company's latest acquisition is, of course, the $16-billion deal with AT&T, a deal that continues the industry's consolidation trend and brings together two telecom behemoths.

Through all of these acquisitions, the SBC name survived when, in some cases, it probably shouldn't have. But in a shrewd business decision, SBC has assumed the AT&T moniker. AT&T, a subsidiary of Alexander Graham Bell's American Bell Telephone, has been around since 1885 and it remains the most powerful telecom brand. AT&T says "large" and therefore "trustworthy."

SBC set aside ego and history to make this decision, and we applaud it.
